What's New ...?
OUTREACH 500 Update
27th May 2008
Well, another racing season has come and gone. We’ve now finished our second season in the Formula 500 ranks and what a season it has been! We’ve had some highs and lows as far as the racing goes but the Chaplaincy side has gone well.
Racing wise.... It’s been a bit of an average year with lots of DNF's at the tracks and quite a bit of damage to the car - all fixable, of course, and it has been, and fixed well. Actually Ian and myself think that I was like a magnet this season! The 'Wise old man of Racing', Ken Willsher, told me that it was just second year blues. Let's pray he’s right and next season we will be more competitive.
Chaplaincy wise.... It has gone very well I feel. What with Ken asking, and wanting, me to be the Chaplain to the Oval Express Series, the season started off well. We followed that with the rest of the season being available to anyone who wanted or needed support. I can honestly say that God has allowed me many opportunities to talk with various people over the season. There were many times in the Oval Express Series where I was able to ‘come alongside’ folk and be there to reassure them. It was not a lot of obvious ‘God stuff’, but it was a ‘God thing’. I was at hospitals visiting injured drivers, talking to family members, making myself available to track staff, encouraging drivers, etc.....the list goes on.
Now none of this is about me but about how we can show that God loves, and is there for, these people. By just being myself and being a serious competitor and friend to all, I pray that they see God in many ways. It's not about preaching to them and telling them they are all going to Hell but it's about just being real and allowing them to open the door to talk. Racing is a dangerous game and people know that. The way they have accepted the opening Prayer at some meetings demonstrates this to me. With the Lord’s help I hope to expand on that next season. I just give thanks to God for the way the speedway people have accepted me and accepted this role. Just maybe inside of folk there is a realisation that there really is something, but they are not too sure how to reach out to it. Mainstream Church is not reaching a lot of ‘unchurched’ people these days and we must keep trying to show that God is Real.
Anyway, I've waffled on long enough but I would just like to finish by thanking my team who have supported me again this season. It is in no order of priority or ability except for Ian, who must come first in my thanks:
Ian Barrett has stayed on for a second year and says he will be onboard again next year. He has been a stalwart of support at the track and behind the scenes. With just the two of us at most places I have come to rely heavily on him and he has not let me down.
To Marg and Danka who have kept the website up–to-date with the goings on of the season. Also to Marg and Brenda who come to the tracks when they can and pray for us. It really means a lot to have people there who are also praying for our safety. Thanks ladies.
To young Stuart and Rebbeca who have come to my home and helped get the car ready for the weekend racing. Thanks Stuart also for your support at some of the tracks. I was hoping to have him as a team member but he is going to be racing his own car next season.
To Billy Sgro of 'Suregrip Ceramics' who has been an ongoing supporter and personal encourager this season.
To Steve and Sharon Gundry of 'Traffic Engineering Services Victoria' who again assisted with support for the car.
To Charles Rockefella and the 'FGBMFI' for their ongoing prayer and support.
To Shane and Daniel McGuire of 'Bannockburn Tyre Sercice' who are ready to help at anytime when I'm in need.
To Ian Worcerter of Morris Oil: again for their product they supply.
To Ray Blick for the signage on the car. Taking into account the way we’ve crumpled a few panels this year it’s good to have that support.
To Steve Carter of 'Racetec' for his help in times of need.
To John Van Groningan and 'Red Dust Role Models' who have come on this season as the major sponsors of our Outreach 500 Team. We are looking forward to having them again as our major sponsor next season. Check our links page to see what they do.
Remember if you would like the Outreach 500 Team to come to your Church, group or organisation to give a presentation then just drop us a line. You can contact us through the website. Again, thanks to all and may God bless and keep you all. We look forward to next season with much enthusiasm and expectancy.
Sincerely, Kev.
