OUTREACH 500 Update

2nd January 2007

Happy New Year everyone!

Here's an update on Outreach 500 results:

OVAL EXPRESS SERIES

Wednesday 27th December, 2006 @ Horsham ~ Kev loves Horsham and reports it's a fantastic track with good overall atmosphere. He says he'd "race there any week".

* Started 13th in the first heat ~ running well when the engine threw a primary chain and lost drive with about a lap to go! Result: DNF

* Heat 2 started out of position 4 and finished well up the field. We were fortunate to make the start as Steve, Ian and Brian had just finished fixing the car. A good result and the team was happy with the car's performance. Again Steve found a problem with the primary chain and we had to buy one from another driver.

* Heat 3 ~ again was a rush to make the start. We started 7th and again had a good result finishing 6th in a high quality field.

* We qualified for the B Main with only 2 heat placings, which was very fortunate for us. (In this quality field drivers can't afford to drop a race). Again, Steve and Ian put in an excellent effort to make the car ready for the race, just in time! We started near the back and were advancing well through the field when 2 cars tangled in front of us and Kev was unable to avoid "joining the party".

The result was damaged steering and out of the race!

All in all, the team was very happy with the night and the performance of the car and Kev would like to thank his crew for their consistent, untiring (successful!) work.

The team returned home and spent 16 hours (who's counting?) fixing the problem. Then, off to Laang...........

Like Horsham, Laang was fantastic! Once again, the team had a good night but they were "dogged with a couple of bad umpiring decisions".

* Heat 1 started out of position 4 and ran well ~ unsure of the placing

* Heat 2 started out of position 11 and moved up the field but had a big hit from behind by one of Australia's top drivers, turning us both around. At restart, both cars were sent to the rear of the field. After the event, Steven Gay, who was the "big hitter" apologised.

* Heat 3 started 9th and again moved up the field but had another punture. We were flagged off the track, costing us points. Because we dropped a heat, we couldn't make the B Main. End of night!

A quick clean up and pack up and off to Hamilton: Our expectations weren't high at Hamilton because we'd worn the rear tyres more than expected. Shane (Bannockburn Tyre Service) regrooved the tyres for us to give them some extra life.

* Heat 1 started 10th and finished 8th. We were pleased with that result.

* Heat 2 we drew the No. 1 spot and finished 2nd!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kev surprised himself! He surprised his loyal team, and some of the other teams ~ Not such a rookie after all!

* Heat 3 started 11th and finished around 8th (not too sure of that ~ the evening was too exciting). Steve and Ian were like a couple of big kids at Christmas! Kev scanned the B Main Grid board for his placing and was disappointed not to see his name. Could this mean he hadn't qualified.......again? Better check the Feature Race Grid, just in case........ YES! 10th position ~ "66".

* Kev started well and passed a couple of cars ..... still running well in 7th or 8th spot ..... tyre trouble resulting in a half spin which allowed 3 or 4 cars to pass us (rear right tyre wearing out through overuse ~ maybe Steve and Ian can sympathise at this point). Another bad umpiring decision cost us some more places and a restart. Kev decided to be a gentleman and go rear of field, in case he hindered the top drivers chances because they were chasing the title. At no stage in the night was Kev in danger of being lapped, which was very satisfying to all the crew. With about 2 laps to go the tyre gave out, Kev spun the car, he incurred another DNF because the engine wouldn't restart. Despite this there were smiles on all the "66" crew faces.

The Oval Express Series is "excitement plus" and Kev was only able to compete in some of the races, due to financial restraints and because he's still classified as a rookie. Next year we're hoping to run the whole series.

Congratulations to Ken and Cheryl Willsher and to Oval Express Magazine on the organizing and running of another fantastic series.

We thank God for letting us participate in this amazing racing series. We pray that His name will be glorified and that He will use whatever small victories we have for His greater cause. Do we have a secret weapon, as some have asked? Yes we do. It's God and it's good and we pray that the secret will get out ...........

Next event is the Victorian State Title at Warnambool on January 13th. We hope to see YOU there!

Yours in His name,
Marg
