At the Track ...
2009 NORTHERN TERRITORY TITLE
ARUNGA PARK
Kev headed up to Alice Springs in the Team TDC truck, kindly supplied by Leigh Goodfellow. He had a great trip up and for once he took plenty of time, in order to arrive in the best possible shape for driving.
Kev arrived at Alice on Thursday afternoon and settled into the Alice Springs Resort as the guest of one of his major sponsors, Red Dust Role Models. John van Gronigan, of Red Dust Role Models takes good care of Kev who stresses the importance of having a good rest before competing in events such as this one. The Big Day for the race was also another Big Day for Kev because it being Anzac Day. For the first time for a number of years Kev was absent from the Bannockburn Anzac Day service, but he was able to commemorate the occasion up North.
Practice was scheduled for Friday night and ‘our man’ was there bright and early (well, he was early). Sadly, 2 or 3 laps into the practice session Kev’s car broke down. Major damage! What a disaster to travel all this way and not be able to compete! Thankfully, help came Outreach 500’s way and 2 other Victorians, Russ Brimmacombe and Matty Turner came to the rescue. Saturday saw the three hard at work in the TDC Refrigeration workshop redesigning and rebuilding the assembly. This huge effort paid off because Kev was able to take his place in the race the next day.
Heat 2 Kev started off pole. He jumped straight to the front and maintained that position.
Heat 4 Kev started on 5. After a great start he jumped into 3rd and finished there.
Heat 6 This was the 3rd and final heat and Kev was once again in a good position, starting out of 3 then jumping to front position and leading all the way to the flag!
Result: Highest points for the night. Qualifying on pole by 7 points to the next competitor, who was the current Australian No. 2. From there, Kev says, “It only got better”.
In his own words: “Not knowing what had been arranged by the organisers and some other folk, Anzac Day became a very special day to me. Leigh Goodfellow had organised that in the Grand Parade I should be the lead car with the others, four abreast, following at a small distance. As the only ex-serviceman in the field and a Vietnam Vet, it was truly humbling to me. It was probably the best Anzac Day I have ever had. How things have changed from a few years ago!”
The Final was now ready. Kev was pole sitter so he started on the inside where there wasn’t much grip and soon settled into 2nd, feeling comfortable. HOWEVER, a few laps into the race a rock flicked up between the chain and the cog, breaking the chain and bringing Kev’s Title event to an early end. He went into the infield and sat the race out, pondering what ‘might have been’ AGAIN! Congratulations to Gavin Hutton for going ‘back to back’ with this event.
Kev would like to send thanks to Leigh Goodfellow and Jenny Speohr of TDC Refrigeration for their support and sponsorship this season. Also to John van Gronigan and Red Dust Role Models. Kev has been associated with Red Dust Role Models behind the scenes for sometime and he very much appreciated their on-going support. Thanks must also go to Morris Oil. Hopefully, next year will be another good one!
Kev is thankful to God for the season and the way the Chaplaincy has been accepted and encouraged by the Formula 500 people.
Thanks for your support and prayers.
God bless,
Marg (for Kev)
