At the Track ...
REDLINE RACEWAY ~ Saturday, 13th March
Saturday was HOT! Because the race was at Redline the starting time was brought forward to 5.00pm. The track looked a picture after the rain and the gumtrees surrounding it made the whole area look fantastic. Ian was Kev’s sole pit-crew so they had a busy night ahead of them!
Heat 1b
Kev’s little Racetec was looking good. It sparkled in the late afternoon sun as it roared around on the Hot Laps. Finally the field lined up for the start with Kev in 3rd place in a field of 9. All was going well and Kev was flying. After a restart he move off in pole position BUT, in lap 7 Kev suddenly headed for the infield! Brenda and I looked at each other..........“THE CHAIN!” What a disaster! This was like old times when Kev’s car seemed so fragile that even the slightest bump resulted in damage. Kev sat out the race and when his car disappeared down the exit we thought there’d have to be a lot of quick repair work to have it back that night...........Oh well ; at least we enjoyed the Hot Laps.
Heat 2a
To our delight we caught sight of the red, yellow and blue Racetec taking it’s place amongst the field for Heat 2. As we found out later, it wasn’t the chain after all. Actually, it was a problem with the petrol ~ there wasn’t any! Ian and Kev had underestimated so they’d run out. The other drivers had many laughs at Kev and Ian’s expense!
Kev started 4th in a field of 9 and after only one stoppage in the race he came in 5th in a finishing field of 6.
Heat 3a
Kev started on pole for this heat. We watched excitedly as his car circled the field at the head and continued to do so right through the 10 laps! How good was that! A totally fantastic heat! Kev returned to the pits to receive hearty encouragement from many of the other 500 drivers.
Finals
The 20 laps began with Kev 16th in a field of 18. After a stoppage in the 5th lap the race restarted and Kev recommenced 12th in a field of 16. The heat was clean and well-raced and Kev finished 12th with no damage and feeling very satisfied with a good night’s racing.
This was a great night with enthusiastic competition but no unpleasant or dangerous incidents. We all had fun and rated this as one of our best 500 nights so far.
Thanks to Kev’s extensive pit-crew of one – Ian. He was amazing as usual.
