At the Track ...
LATEST UPDATE from the OUTREACH 500 Team - 8th January, 2009
JACK WILLSHER CUP
Warrnambool
The rained-out Jack Willsher Cup was re-scheduled for Saturday 21st December. Saturday dawned brightly and the team was ready for the trip. Ian and Kev took their time loading the gear before heading off for Warnambool. After meeting up with the Turners, they travelled in convoy for most of the way and Kev was delighted to see a train near Cressy, which he reported as one of the highlights of the night! After arriving at the track, the team settled in for the night’s racing.
The night was opened by Kev, as Chaplain, being invited to pray over the evening’s events.....truly a privilege for him. The Formula 500 people are now backing the concept of an opening prayer and Kev is grateful to God that he is being accepted in his role of Chaplain.
The first event was Heat 3.
Kev started out of last place (11th) and he actually moved up a few places, until another car’s engine exploded in front of him. Kev had no option but to hit the brakes hard and he virtually stopped as his vision was down to nil due to the smoke. Sadly, the car rolled off the track and, therefore, no yellow light was required. However, Kev was now back to the end of the line, due to his detour. The end result was about an 8th place finish.
Heat 6: Kev drew 2nd and he was on the outside of the front row. He started well and dropped into 2nd spot. Kev held this place until another car rolled over, bringing on the red lights. At the restart he managed to pick up the tail of the lead quickly. This resulted in a good finish ~ they were able to hold onto 2nd. The team was very happy with the result, but the car was a handful to drive!
The final result was that Kev went straight into the Final in 11th position. The team agreed that this was a very good result. Throughout the night Ian and Rob worked on the car and made changes, but, in the final they ran with the pace but Kev had difficulty keeping it in a straight line. Kev suffered setbacks such as red light stoppages and the rough track causing the exhaust to break and finally fall off with still 10 laps to go, causing a loss of power so the end result was that Kev dropped back to 15th position. The team was, on the whole, very pleased with the result, and excited that they finished on their third attempt at the JWC.
So, off home with others following and a gathering at Bannockburn to end the night!
Kev thanks Ian and Rob for their continued support.
Please continue to hold Kev up to the Lord in prayer as he endeavours to honour his role as Chaplain.
God bless,
Marg
