"Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us" - Hebrews 8:1

At the Track ...

HAMILTON
TRIPLE CROWN SERIES

Round 1:

Kev and the team were all keen to try out the new car because, following Warnambool, they felt it would be f a s t. . . . Kev went out for the hot lap session but was disappointed with the speed. He felt the car wasn’t set up correctly. This meeting was set up differently from the normal events where a time trial and one heat are run. In the time trial the car wasn’t geared right so Kev was a little off the pace, but he was still happy with his new car. Kev started out of position 4 and ran in 3rd spot right from the start, finishing 3rd. They were very happy with this result: young Shane Van Dynhoven was working on the set-up and the car felt good. In the Pre-Main event Kev started mid-pack and was going well but in lap 6 a piece of clay wedged in the throttle linkage and jammed it wide open. The result was tht the car slid up into the fence and rolled over. That was the end of the race.......and the night! Kev had dislocated his right thumb and couldn’t drive again that night. The car was loaded up and the team watched the rest of the night’s racing. Despite the disappointing sudden end to the night’s racing for Kev, the team’s spirits were high because the car had shown some good pace. The next 2 weeks were very busy getting everything (including Kev) back in shape for the upcoming Oval Express Series.

HAMILTON

OVAL EXPRESS SERIES

Round 1:

The team once again headed back to Hamilton, ready and keen to compete in the Oval Express Series. At the previous meeting the team had used the control tyre which was compulsory for this event so this gave them a little advantage over the other drivers who had used their normal soft tyres. Shane was once again in charge of the set-up and he had the car dialled in well. For some reason, there were not times available for Kev’s Hot Lap session, but all felt it was fast.

1st Heat: Kev started off the back and moved up well through the field. All were very impressed with the car’s speed. This was very encouraging to all of the team as they had put in such a lot of effort to get it ready. Shane and Ian had the car working well. It’s great to have Shane in the team this year as his health problems have prevented him from competing in his own car.

2nd Heat: Kev started out mid-pack. Not much progress through the field but still the team was pleased with the car’s performance. Shane’s expert adjustments before each race helped ‘no end’ and Ian and Kev appreciate his experience and knowledge.

In the next race Kev started off the pole. He was jumped by the Australia 1 car but sat in behind him and felt good. However, he made a mistake and was passed. This happened a couple of times and Kev thought Shane had made a wrong adjustment......but they still finished 5th, which kept Kev in the points race. After the race Kev and Shane had a chat about what went wrong with the adjustment to the car. As Kev climbed out Shane told him to stand straight up and Kev hit his head on the wing side panel. It seems the wing had collapsed under the load and that’s why the car went away. So all were very happy as the speed was good.

B Main: The end result was that we had qualified in 11th place for the B Main. Kev started well and was making ground on quite a few cars. But on lap 6 the ambulance on the infield began flashing its lights to respond to a situation before the field was brought under caution. This resulted in some of the drivers becoming confused at the sudden appearance of flashing red lights! As Kev was going ‘flat out’ to pass a car, the car immediately in front of him braked hard, thinking he needed to stop in response to the flashing red light. The sad result of this was that the little Vic 66 car headed skywards and destroyed itself along the way! It took half an hour to remove Kev from the car!

Kev was taken to Hamilton Base Hospital where he spent three nights and three days!

It’s been a hard few weeks of recovery and disappointment as we look at the sad little car in the shed. Our season has been put on hold while both Kev and the car get back into shape. It’s hoped that we can get going again for the Australian Title to be held in the Northern Territory. Kev has gone well there over the past two seasons and we’re looking to do so again. In Kev’s own words: “ No matter what we give all the glory to God who not only keeps us safe but who also allows us to do His work within the speedway scene.”

Til next time, God bless,
Marg
