At the Track ...
LATEST UPDATE from the OUTREACH 500 Team - 17th December, 2008
Hi Everyone,
I didn’t attend the meeting on the 29th November at Laang, but Kev has updated me with the information so here it is:
LAANG SPEEDWAY, 29th NOVEMBER, 2008 AD
November, 29th was added to the calendar because the night at Warnambool for the Jack Willsher Cup was washed out. Kev was one of only eleven drivers who took advantage of the extra track time provided by Laang. As Kev’s trusty side-kick, Ian, was unavailable on the night, Kev attended by himself. Rob Fraser stepped in and was a big help on the night. Rob and Ken Willsher went to work on Kev’s car, making lots of changes, which suited Kev very well as he trusted their expertise and experience.
Heat 1
Because of the changes to the suspension and new, different settings, Kev decided to start at the rear of the field. There were only five in the field so Kev dropped back about a quarter of a lap, just in case the car handled very differently. To Kev’s delight, the car flew! Kev finished 3rd. Everyone was happy with the modifications.
Heat 2
Kev started in pole position and after a close start he moved to 1st. Rob had made even more changes and the car was even better! Kev drove around as if he was the only competitor in the heat and finished 1st! (Make the most of that, Kev!) Smiles all around!
Heat 3
Kev started at the rear again and ran well but the last changes hadn’t been as successful as the previous ones. The car went well and finished well and talk around the pits was that the little ‘Bumblebee’ was flying. Rob’s experience was paying dividends and it felt great.
Final
Kev started 5th and was running well, feeling very confident in the car but.......and there’s usually a BUT somewhere!........He hit a rut in turn 3 and 4 which redirected the car into the fence. Kev had felt so confident with the car that he thought it would just clip the fence and continue, BUT not so! The back clipped the concrete and turned the front into the wall and the Kev climbed the fence. As he had full throttle on, this actually helped the car to remain upright. However, the rear was again tossed hard into the fence and this resulted in a broken wheel and a flat tyre. Kev climbed from the car smiling broadly, reminiscent of the smile he’d had in his first event two years ago.
Kev thanks Rob and Ken for their involvement and he is very pleased to say that Rob Fraser has joined the team. His set-up knowledge will be of great assistance in the future. So, next race is Simpson.
SIMPSON SPEEDWAY, 6th DECEMBER, 2008 AD
December 6th dawned cloudy and mild and it was ‘touch and go’ as to whether the race would be cancelled. When no phone calls came to deter the ‘boys’ from heading for Simpson, they assumed it was ok for the night so they headed off in Leigh’s V8 Ute ~ roaring down the Highway to Colac and beyond.
The race meeting was opened with prayer by Noel Mitaxa. It was much appreciated by many.
Heat 1
Kev started 6th in heat one and held his position, finishing 6th. The little car looked great and was going really well although the track was damp clay and very rough.
Heat 2
Kev started 5th and remained in that place, finishing 5th. No dints......Yet! So a good round!
Heat 3
Kev started in 8th position and was going well, making ground and holding his own when another driver cut up on him and damaged his car, leaving him without his favourite red wing, and other minor damage! Kev was quite discouraged but Ian and Rob put in a fantastic effort and had the little car humming again for the finals.
Final
A field of 20 was expected but 19 lined up. Kev was in 18th position. He put in a great effort and stayed out of trouble for the whole Final! The race was stopped several times and the field was down by 6 cars when the race finally finished. Kev roared over the finish line in 10th position.
Overall, it was a good night, although the spectators, including Brenda and me, were frozen stiff and slightly wet by the end of the night. Thank goodness for seat warmers in our car!
Thanks to Ian and Rob who worked diligently on the car. It certainly paid off!
Kev and the team hope to see you at the track for a chat sometime. Thanks for your support and interest.
God bless, Marg
