At the Track ...
Update - 27th November, 2006
Hi everyone,
The last few months have certainly been a test of faith as everything
imaginable has seemed to go wrong: various engine and electrical problems ~
even a minor 'mishap' resulting in a slightly damaged front-end due to
engine difficulties. Kev had to continually re-focus on the reason for this
project.
Following much prayer and perspiration, the team finally headed off to
Warnambool for the running of the Annual Jack Willsher Cup (big stuff!) The
guys looked very professional and 'cool' until it was time to open the
trailer ~ our fearless leader had forgotten (is this typical???) to take the
key for the trailer! Having secured the only remaining spot which was right
in the middle of the parking area, it was difficult to disguise 4 (then 3)
grown men physically wrestling with the padlock. After much embarrassment,
the lock gave in and it was 'all systems go' at last! The question remained
~ Would the engine let Kev down, again? Would he have a chance to really
compete or would it be a fizzer again?
Having no experience on this type of car (beam-axle), everything was new.
The 'Four Stooges' headed for the dummy grid for Race 1 (our first race in
the car).
. Race 1/Heat 2 - Started from the rear as we were classified as Rookies.
FINISHED: 8th (All faces beaming)
. Race 2/Heat 3 - Started from the rear (still classified as Rookies).
FINISHED: 7th (Smiles even broader)
. Race 3/Heat 6 - Started from the rear (still Rookies!) In with some of
Australia's BEST! FINISHED: 6th (Awesome!)
Next Race: FINAL! Surprising everyone because we thought we were in for
the B-Main, everyone was 'blown away' including our competitors who'd
witnessed the 'break-in' earlier in the evening! It was a very high-class
field including the cream of Australia's Formula 500 drivers.
Kev reports:
"It was a hard-fought race with a few 'yellows' and one very serious 'red'
light periods. Fortunately, no-one was injured, however there was some very
sad equipment around by the end of the night. At the last re-start, we had
moved up to 4th position ~ UNREAL! Words fail me ~ (that is Unreal).
However, the outside front tyre picked up something on the track from a
wrecked car and it deflated very quickly. The steward flagged us to the
infield with 6 laps to go. Because of the puncture, the car was
uncontrollable and we nearly hit the fence twice. (The steward did me a
favour)."
Kev was so excited when he got out of the car that he surprised the
officials by his exuberance! They'd never seen such excitement from someone
who'd been forced to retire from a race ~ little did he know the sense of
achievement that all the team now had ~ The car's still in one piece and it
can GO! Simpson, here we come!
God's presence was truly felt and thanks, everyone, for your continued
prayer support! Outreach 500 has now achieved what we were always hoping
for ~ credibility in the eyes of the racing fraternity! Praise God! Our
ongoing aim is to be seen as a serious contender within the racing
fraternity, gaining the acceptance of our peers and opening the doors for
God's love to 'reach out in outreach' = Outreach 500.
Next Race Meeting is in Simpson on 9th December, 2006 AD. Check site for
regular updates now the season' commenced in earnest.
Love and blessings,
Marg
