At the Track ...

TOLMER SPEEDWAY, 7th-8th March 2009

Tolmer Speedway in Bordertown, South Australia, hosted the 2009 Australian Formula 500 National Championships on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of March. This was the first time the National Championships had been held in Bordertown.

There was a sizeable field of drivers (58 in total) competing for the National Title this year. At the end of qualifying, Kev was ranked 46th but still within one second of the second fastest qualifier.

Kev’s first heat of the weekend was event 6 on Saturday evening. He began the race in 9th position and completed it in the same position. Having started 10th in his second heat, Kev finished 8th. The competition was fierce and the drivers were pumped and feeling the pressure of the high quality competition. As a result there were many accidents, particularly in some of the other heats, thankfully Kev managed to successfully avoid them. In Kev’s third heat for the evening he began in 2nd position on the front row – a fantastic place to start. Kev took full advantage of this starting position and in the second lap moved swiftly into first position – his car was speeding along at what seemed like lightning speed – he kept ahead of his competition to rightfully claim first place at the end of this heat. We were all very excited to see him win this heat so convincingly. What a great way to finish the first evening of racing.

Sunday evening began with all the competitors – complete with Australian flags – driving around the track in parade formation. The fierce competition soon resumed, however, and Kev’s last heat race of the weekend was on event eight for the night. Starting the race in 3rd position, he continued to hold his position until a mistake by the race controller. As a response to a minor spin by another competitor, the yellow caution light flashed on but was quickly replaced by the green light. At the sight of the yellow light Kev correctly slowed down, however the drivers around him continued to drive. With this mix-up Kev dropped back to fifth place where he remained until the end of the race; however, as a result of a successful protest, he was declared to have finished in 3rd place. This fantastic result placed him as an automatic entry in the A main in 16th position.

Prior to the A main race, the track underwent a major regrading. The drivers then lined up their cars around the infield for display. The drivers were ready for the final, and most important, race of the weekend – the anticipation could almost be felt as the drivers prepared to give their best. During the race there were a number of crashes and accidents, however Kev successfully avoided many close calls by spinning his car around to bring it to a sudden stop – one commentator said he was impressed with Kev’s “dancing” in the race! Kev completed this year’s National Championship in an honourable 14th position.

Well done Kev and Ian on a fantastic weekend of racing.
