Jack Willsher Cup….2007/2008

Well we had our first Victorian race meeting of the new season on Saturday the 24th at Warrnambool. As we had been over to South Australia for a run a couple of weeks earlier, we were ready to race. It is really amazing just how much things have come along in the Formula 500 scene. There is so much American machinery running now that the class is very competitive. I suppose with the Aussie dollar being so good against the US dollar, it is quite cheap to import overseas equipment.

Well we were drawn to start out of position 12 for heat one. The track was in real good shape and we were able to pull through the field to finish 6th, a result I was very pleased with. The car ran well with none of the Murry Bridge gremlins so it was just a quick clean up and get ready for the next race. We were then drawn out of position 3 for heat 4. Again after a good start we were passed by a couple of cars but managed to regain out third place. However there was a stoppage and on the restart a couple of quick cars that were behind me on the track, jumped by. That was a pity as we had their measure until then. Once the momentum is lost the quick cars just pounce.

Anyway we were still happy as we qualified straight to the final and did not have to go through the B main. I started behind the Aussie Champion Ben McLeod, and managed to pass him off the line. However it didn’t last long as young Ben powered by again. He is a worthy champion and a good ambassador for the sport. I think I made up a couple of places when the car just died. It was quite unsettling there for a minute as the following cars made their way past but I managed to get to the infield without being hit. The end result was a fuel pump failure. So we finished our Jack Willsher cup on the infield just like last year. We all laugh but pray this isn’t the way it will be each year.

I would just like to thank Ian who has been on hand at both meetings so far and is very keen and eager to do the pit work by himself. He is a true friend and also a great help at the tracks.

Simpson 8th December 2007 Round 1 of the Stallard Chassis Stampede Series

Ian and Kev, accompanied by Billy Sgro who had come to try out on the pit crew, headed off to Simpson for the first of the series. As usual, the weather was warm and the track was rough. There was a friendly atmosphere amongst officials and competitors and even though the night was supposed to begin and end early, it didn’t start until about 8 pm. It reminded Kev of being in the army, what he calls ‘Hurry up and wait”.

First race was heat 1 ~ started 6th place and finished 4th. Had handling problems with the car. Very hard to steer. We discovered the steering box had fallen off. Happy with the result.

Second race was heat 4 ~ started out of 5th and finished 3rd. The car handled well.

Our third race was heat 5 ~ started out of 10th. Had a good run but was involved in a tangle with another driver who tried an ambitious overtaking manouever which unbalanced both cars. We stayed on our wheels but he rolled over. Finished 6th.

Final: We started out of 8th and ran well all the way through and finished 6th. There were quite a few yellow flag incidents in this race. All in all it was a good night’s racing.

Thanks for Ian and Billy for their effort in keeping the car going. Our next event will be Round 1 of the Oval Express Series held at Horsham on 27th December.

Till next update I pray God’s blessings upon all.
