At the Track ...
LATEST UPDATE from the OUTREACH 500 Team - 15th February, 2009
Hi Everyone,
This week has been a truly horrible one for many people. They’ve gone through life-changing events due to the horrific bushfires. I’m sure we are all holding them up to the Lord in our prayers and helping them as we see opportunities arising.
As we all know, the next 6 months to a year will see many changes in the lives of the survivors as they try to come to terms with all the decisions and grief that will continue to impact their lives. Our prayer is that those who love the Lord will be given strength to cope with these heartbreaking challenges, and that in their pain and heartbreak, they’ll be able to share their faith with others who are unaware of the strength we can experience in God’s love.
May we continue to pray for the Pastors and Church Leaders involved in counselling and caring for those who are suffering, whether they’re residents of these communities, the CFA, nurses and doctors, the Salvation Army, emergency care workers, media people etc. etc.
May God bless you and your families,
Kev and Marg
TOLMER SPEEDWAY, BORDERTOWN
Brenda and I didn’t attend this race at Bordertown but Kev reported on the details, so I’ll bring you the report as he saw it:
Saturday, 7th Feb was a terrible day. By the time Kev and Ian left Bannockburn, the heat and wind were becoming menacing......the forecast was for high 40’s!
Kev reported that he couldn’t remember a day such as this! The heat and wind were terrible, making driving extremely difficult. As they drove through Horsham they were aware of the fires which were getting a real grip on the area! As we know, this was a day of real tragedy for many people and the fires took a huge toll on several towns around the state, Horsham being one of them.
Kev reported:
“At the speedway we were asked to open with prayer and we prayed for the people of Victoria and the situation around the state. We also asked for travelling safety and for those involved at the speedway.’
Kev and Ian used this venue as an opportunity to try out the car, because the Australian Title is being held there on 7th and 8th March, and the car has been entered for the first time. The “boys” feel they have a chance of finishing in the Top Ten, which is their goal. This is a ‘high-profile’ event and Kev is keen to compete and he believes that ‘the time is right’.
Kev liked the track which has a sandy surface (more like the older tracks) although, maybe due to the fact that there are no water issues in Bordertown, it was a little too wet! As the night progressed it roughed up a bit but it was grippy and fast!
1st Event, heat 1
Off the first row in 2nd place.
The heats are done according to the point score and, as Kev was in the top half of the ladder, he started off in the fast group and on the front. He jumped to the lead and held it until the last lap and a half, finishing 2nd.
2nd Event, heat 3
Started off pole and lead til a lap and a half to go (again!) when he was passed by two cars after making a small mistake. Kev still managed to finish 3rd. This made Kev 3rd highest point scorer on the night. Both Ian and Kev were very pleased with the car’s performance as it was fast and was running well.
Next Event, heat 6
This time they commenced off the rear and Kev was looking forward to working his way through the traffic. Some of the many changes that had been made to the car prior to this race were a little radical, but they didn’t live up to Kev’s hopes and, although the car was fast, he finished where he started. This resulted in him qualifying 8th in the final. This was a good result considering the class of the field.
Final
More radical changes made to the car with the Aussie Titles’s in mind. The car ran hard but the track, although still an interesting surface to run on, was very rough. There were a few stoppages, one involving Kev which had the potential to be a big one, but, after being checked by the infield crew he took his place once more to restart. (Things are looking up!) Finally, Kev was very pleased to finish 10th.
Kev says:
Thanks again to Ian, who works tirelessly on race nights. It’s a huge task for one person and it’s due to him that the car keeps going.
Thanks to the Outreach 500 Team for their effort and support.
Most importantly, we give praise to God for what He has done for us.
The team looks forward to seeing you at the track some time.
