At the Track ...
Latest updates as of 18th April, 2007
Laang Round 5/Russell Hayden Scaffold Hire Series - 17th March 2007
A lot of work was done after Horsham to repair the serious damage which had
been done to the back end and the drive line.
Race 1 ~ We started near the front and had a consistent run, finishing where
we started. The car ran well, however, at the end of the race we discovered
that the front chain was seriously damaged, needing to be replaced.
Race 2 ~ Another front row start for us. Again the car ran well but, on
coming onto the straight the car threw the front chain, causing similar
damage to Horsham and preventing us from finishing the night!
Understandably, everyone was disappointed! On to Hamilton ...
Hamilton Round 6/Russell Hayden Scaffold Hire Series - March 24th
Once again, following many hours of work on the car and consultation with
Steve Carter in Ballarat, we were confident of another good night. However,
because we were unsure that the car would be fixed in time, we had
previously withdrawn from this meeting, which meant that we were a 'late
entry'. This meant we started off the back all night, but we were feeling
good about that!
Race 1 ~ We started off the back of the 'fast pack' and ran with them,
dicing with the leaders of the series. No-one seemed to be able to break
through the pack so our position remained unchanged. After the race
everyone was feeling positive.
Race 2 ~ While pushing the car to the starting position the team felt a
resistance, but they thought the car had 'bottomed out' and was stuck.
Suddenly it became free and Kev drove out onto the track to line up for the
start. HOWEVER, halfway through the lap he found himself fighting the car
as it tried to dig the right front corner in and roll over. As it turned
out, the bearings and hub assembly had collapsed and had sheered off which
left Kev with only three wheels! The wheel and hub assembly proved very
difficult to find and a bit of bush bashing was needed to finally locate
them....ANOTHER DNS (did not start). Kev felt blessed that the incident
happened when it did because it could have been very dangerous had it
happened at speed.
Race 3 ~ Following a lot of work by the crew and the supply of spare parts
from other teams we made the next race. Congratulations to all on a great
effort. However, as Kev drove out the gate and pulled the clutch, the chain
jumped off and we lost drive. Another DNS!
Race 4 ~ No reason could be found for the chain coming off in Race 3 so we
wrote it down as 'one of those things in motor racing'. As we were off the
back all night it didn't bother us. HOWEVER .. again ... as Kev pulled out
onto the track and, once again pulled the clutch, the chain dropped off!
Absolute frustration! BUT the view is very good from the infield and Kev
realized just how fast the 500s travel! Everybody was disappointed by a
night that should have been a lot better. Bring on Warrnambool .......
Warrnambool Round 7/Russell Hayden Scaffold Hire Series - April 1st
This was a Day Meeting AND a Sunday and Kev was disappointed to miss out on
his normal church attendance. Because of the drought, causing water
restrictions, it was difficult for the track to be up to it's usual
standard.
Race 1 ~ Again, after much work on the front end we were 'hot to trot'. We
started the first race out of position 6, ran hard and fast and finished 5th
HOWEVER ....Not this time!...........Everybody was feeling good.
Race 2 ~ Kev tried to line up in position 5 and ran well to finish 4th.
Again, everybody happy with the hassle-free race.
Race 3 ~ We started out of position 8(ish). Once again the car was going
like clockwork but Kev had a 'half lose' and finished near the rear of the
field ~ still happy! Three race starts and three race finishes ~ cool!
Race 4 ~ FINAL. We started out mid-pack. The car was running well, thanks
to young Chad Sullivan who gave us his spare drive tyre. Our tyre was worn
and this was very sporting of him. Again, we ran hard and fast but while
trying to do an inside pass Kev hit a wet patch in the track causing the car
to swap ends quickly. In an endeavour to keep it going Kev floored it to
turn it around but it hit the same wet spot and again started to loop so he
repeated the 'flat to the floor' scenario. After two high-speed 360's Kev
managed to point the car in the right direction and continued without
stopping, only dropping a few places. Kev learned later that the crowd went
wild, fully appreciating the Sprint Car Style antics. We finished 8th ~ a
good result! Four starts, four finishes ~ Team stoked! Kev's new name ~
"The Doughnut King". Bring on Ballarat on 21st April. Hope to see you
there!
God bless, Marg
