At the Track ...
Latest update as of 1st April, 2008
Hi everyone,
I hope you had a great Easter ~ I did. It was so good to be reminded once again of how much Jesus loves us and what He was prepared to go through so that we can follow Him through death to life.
This is my view of the last two Race Meetings I attended as part of Kev’s support crew.
Redline Speedway March 1st
The day was lovely and warm when we (my daughter Brenda and I) set out for the Speedway. Kev and team were optimistic and excited, as usual. The hot laps went well and we settled down for a night of entertainment. The track was extremely rough and hard on the cars.
1st Round
Kev did well without incident and we waited expectantly for the 2nd heat.
2nd Round
Kev looked good but it didn’t seem to be long before he was out of the race following an incident. The car needed mechanical repairs so it was ‘curtains’ for the Outreach 500 team that night.
Laang Speedway March 29th
Wingless Won Thousand
Kev was a little unsure whether he’d enter this race. It was a different concept from the normal meetings because the cars were to be run ‘wingless’. This meant that the drivers needed to use all their skills to drive the cars because they’re designed to be driven with wings to stabilize them. Kev decided this would be a real challenge and hoped that his long (very long) years of experience would hold him in good stead.
Saturday was cold and quite windy when we arrived at the track. Kev had told Brenda and me to be there by 4-4.30 pm so we were! We wondered why we received wry smiles from the ticket sellers but all was plain when we parked our car and looked for the rest of the crowd. It wasn’t there! We were the only spectators......and remained so for almost an hour! We amused ourselves by trying out several vantage spots around the track before we settled on the hill. Eventually, the ‘crowds’ started to arrive and the racing began.
Kev’s time wasn’t very fast in the hot laps due to an engine problem so he had the pleasure of pole position for the first heat. Between the hot laps and the first heat work was carried out on the car and by the time the first heat commenced the little car was ready to race.
1st Round
Kev was in pole position and stayed there right throughout the race until he was pipped almost at the post. It was a fantastic run and we were very excited to see the little car performing so well!
2nd Round
Kev began in pole position again and was off smartly, as in the previous race. Sadly, partway through the 2nd round he spun out and was collected by another car, bending his axle and taking him out of the race! We were all very disappointed but we knew that if it was at all possible for the dedicated team to mend the damage....it would be done! Kev made his exit from the track on the trailer with his damaged car ~ an all-too-familiar sight!
50 lap final
This was what we’d been waiting for and would Kev make an entrance. We knew he’d be mortified if he was left out of this race. Could the team work miracles.....again? Yes! With a little help from their friends they repaired the damage satisfactorily and out came the little ‘multi-coloured’ pocket rocket! We were thrilled to see it and knew that there would have been some furious work done to get it functional again. In this race, all the cars competed together so it was a big field! Kev started near the rear of the field, following his non-completion of the previous round. Outreach 500 was making it’s way through the field and going strong when, about half way through the race Kev spun out and so was relegated to the tail of the field again! After many re-starts and a re-fuelling opportunity half way through the race, the round finally ended with Kev coming in a fantastic 8th! No major dramas in the night for our team! Praise God!
Great work, everyone. Good on you Ian and Stewy, your amazing work paid off! It was a fantastic night! The only major drawback to the entire evening was the absence of doughnuts!
We all thank our God for His protection and for the opportunity of showing His love. Please pray that Kev will be able to be a blessing to our Lord Jesus as he competes in this sport that he loves.
Hope to see you ‘trackside’ soon.
Marg
