At the Track ...

LATEST UPDATE from the OUTREACH 500 Team - 26th May, 2008

Laang Race Meeting, 3rd May, 2008

Once again, Brenda and I made our way to Laang Raceway. Unfortunately, we’d left Kev’s directions somewhere and so it took us quite a while to decipher the Melways map. Despite this, we made it in good time and took up our favourite position near the fence where we had a good view of the total track. Once again, it was cold as we settled down for the next few hours. Recent rain had softened the track and there was no need for the water truck to dampen it down.

The 500s soon made their first appearance and Kev did well, completing his hot laps without incident. The field was large with about thirty 500 drivers.

Because of Kev’s accumulated points for the season, he was placed in the second half. All went well in Kev’s first heat and he finished half way down the field. The track developed ruts near the first turn, which caused some difficulty as cars spun out at that point.

In the second heat, Kev was doing well and making his way up through the field, when there was an early stoppage which caused the cars to resume their starting positions. This set Kev back and he had his work cut out for him again! Sadly, he received a significant bump in the re-started race and this put him out for that heat.

Kev’s car missed the third heat due to damage caused in the previous round, which was disappointing for all of us but, thankfully, he made another appearance in the finals taking up his position in the B main. All seemed well until he received another substantial blow on the starting line which put him out of contention for the night!

While Kev was side-lined in the centre of the track the race continued and, without warning, 2 of the remaining competitors collided, causing one of them to catch fire! There was shock in the crowd as people raced to the fence to see what would happen. As we had a front-row seat, we could see the car, the flames and the driver......but we also saw Kev, cleverly disguised as Spider Man, come running across to offer assistance to the trapped 500 driver who had no way of escape because the other car was squeezed up against his. As we all watched in horror, Kev braved the flames and, in true Spider Man form, helped the young man to safety......finally assisted by the fire brigade who couldn’t quite keep up with his heroic endeavours! Brenda and I decided that, even though he didn’t win the 500 race that night, he won the sprint that really counted!

This night was full of incident and it was good to see Kev’s little car once more loaded safe and sound, ready to come home and race another day!

That was the closing event for this season’s competition. All that remained was a Test Day which was held today at Laang.

We all wish you God’s blessings and continue to appreciate your prayers and support.

Yours in His name until next season ~
Marg
